The School of Marxism of North China University of Technology (NCUT) was established in 2014 as a special institution tasked to carry out ideological and political theoretical education and Marxism research. The predecessor of the School of Marxism is the Department of Ideological and Political Theory Instruction (established in 2009). Since its establishment, the School of Marxism has inherited a fine tradition, and is primarily responsible for the education, teaching and management of ideological and political theory. It has made great contributions to the implementation of the fundamental task of “Strengthen Moral Education and Cultivate People”.
The School currently has 52 staff members, of which 33 are full-time teachers and 19 are part-time teachers, including 10 full professors, 21 associate professors and 21 lecturers. The list of honorable titles held by the faculty is extensive, and includes 1 “Famous Teacher Award of Beijing Higher Education”, 1 “Renowned Young Teaching Teacher Award of Beijing Higher Education”, 2 selected into “Hundred Talents Project” of Beijing Social Science Theoretical Talents, 1 selected into “Beijing Great Wall Scholars” program, 1 selected into “Excellent Young and Middle-aged Ideological and Political Teachers Funding Program” nationwide, 1 awarded “Renowned Talents of ‘The Four Batches’ in Publicity and Culture System in Beijing”, 2 selected into “Excellent Young and Middle-aged Ideological and Political Teachers Funding Program” in Beijing, 2 selected into “Beijing Ideological and Political Teachers Yang Fan Funding Program”, 3 awarded the title of “Excellent Moral Educational Workers in Beijing Universities”, and 5 awarded the title of “Outstanding Moral Educational Worker in Beijing Universities”. Relying on the University’s Talents Policy and the short-term project of Beijing Overseas Reunion Project, the School of Marxism employs experts and scholars from many well-known domestic universities including Peking University and Renmin University of China, and scholars from Hochschule München University of Applied Sciences as distinguished professors.
The School consists of seven teaching and research sections: basic principles of Marxism, the theoretical system of Mao Zedong Thought and Socialism with Chinese Characteristics, the ideological and moral cultivation and the basic law education, the Outline of Modern and Contemporary Chinese History, the Introduction to Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, Situation and Policy Education and Postgraduate Education and Teaching. Two research centers (at university-level): Contemporary Marxism and Industrial Civilization Research Center and Ideological Culture and Social Development Research Center. Four research institutes (at school-level): Institute of Marxist Philosophy, Institute of the History and Culture of the Communist Party of China, Institute of Citizen Moral Education, and Institute of Characteristic Theory and Cultural Innovation.
In addition, the School has finished up with some significant achievements of its own, including establishing a studio for well-known teachers of ideological and political courses in universities in Beijing (2015) and a demonstration base for educational reform of ideological and political courses in universities in Beijing (2018). As a lead unit, the School of Marxism has received the approval of the National Quality Education Base for University Students (2006) and the first batch of Beijing College Students Quality Education Base (2010).
North China University of Technology attaches great importance to the discipline construction of Marxist Theory, and regards the School of Marxism as a “leading school”, ideological and political courses as leading courses, and provides major support in system setup, resource allocation, funding guarantee and other aspects. After long-term efforts, the discipline construction has achieved remarkable results. In 2006, the school was granted Master’s Degree Program in the secondary discipline of Ideological and Political Education. In 2011, the school was granted Master’s Degree Program in the first level discipline of Marxist Theory. The discipline of Ideological and Political Education was rated as a key construction discipline in Beijing, and the discipline of Marxist Theory was selected as one of the dominant disciplines in North China University of Technology.
With the goal of cultivating talents in Marxist Theory in the new era, the school implements the team cultivation mode of “main supervisor plus co-supervisor plus associate supervisor”, and endeavors to cultivate talents in Marxist Theory with excellent ideological quality, high professional level, and strong practical ability. Pursuant to this goal, many students in our school have published articles in core journals including Leading Journal of Ideological & Theoretical Education and Studies in Ideological Education. One student was selected as a member of the 18th National Congress of the Communist Youth League of China. Many students were selected into “Group of Learning Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era in Beijing”. Many students were awarded the titles of “Outstanding Student Cadre of Beijing”, “Outstanding Graduate of Beijing”, and “Advanced Individuals” in Youth Serving Nation capital college students summer social practice. More than 100 graduate students have been trained, and the employment rate has reached 100%.
In recent years, relying on the location advantages of NCUT as the only university in the western part of Beijing, and based on Beijing’s urban development planning, the School of Marxism actively keeps in contact with government departments, enterprises, public institutions, and community, fully exploits the advantages of the characteristics of theoretical research and of talent team, solidly carries out various projects of community services, and has formed a mature and stable operating mode for community service.
